You’ve worked hard to stay fit all spring, don’t let the cold months and holiday feasts set you back! Layering up is a great way to keep riding all year round outdoors, but if you’re not the type to brave the cold, you can still stay fit while riding your bike indoors on a trainer.
A trainer is a simple tripod-like device that attaches to your bike’s rear wheel and lifts it slightly off the ground to turn your bike into a stationary bike. Most models fold for easy storage, and are perfect for keeping fit over the winter, or for getting in a workout at night. Set it up in front of your TV, and pedal away during your favorite show!
There are three types of indoor trainers:
A wind trainer generates resistance with a fan, and produces a wide range of resistance. There is no adjustment on a wind trainer: when you pedal harder the resistance increases. Wind trainers are very loud, so they are best for a basement or spare room.
Magnetic trainers generate resistance with a magnet. They are the most popular type of trainer, and the one we here at Erlton recommend most. They are steady state resistance, meaning no matter how hard you pedal, the resistance stays the same. Some magnetic trainer models come with an attachment for your handlebars to adjust the resistance as you ride.
Fluid trainers are similar to wind trainers, but they are silent. They offer progressive resistance as you pedal, and provide the most realistic riding experience.
Riding indoors in winter on a trainer is not only a great way to stay fit, but also a great time to up your cycling skills. Not only can you simulate hills you’d never find in South Jersey, a trainer is the best way to learn to use clip less shoes without fear of falling!
